Braces treatment was used to correct an anterior open bite tendency (the front teeth were not overlapping enough, even when biting together at the back). We also aligned the teeth in both arches.
Notes: Crowding and Anterior Open Bite Tendency. Braces upper and lower 23 months.
Outcomes shown are only relevant for this patient and do not necessarily reflect the results other patients may experience. Results will vary depending on patients’ individual circumstances.
We used braces to correct a deep overbite and increased overjet, as well as straighten both upper and lower teeth.

Braces treatment was used to correct the patient’s left side crossbite and moderate crowding.
Notes: Left side posterior crossbite, crowding. Braces upper and lower 6 months, patient also had an adjunctive procedure (Periodontally Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics) with a periodontist which accelerated the orthodontic treatment. It is important to remember that all surgeries involve risk, even when carried out by an appropriately qualified, experienced professional.

Braces treatment (with the final 3 months in clear aligners) was used to close spaces and correct an overbite.
Correction of an overbite is often recommended to reduce excessive tooth wear over time.
In these before-and-after braces photos, you may be able to see that the front teeth have been moved a little further up. This is one way to correct a significant overbite.
There are several different ways an orthodontist can correct an overbite. As part of the orthodontic treatment planning process, Dr Fine will look at the bigger picture, and devise a personalised plan to provide the best results in each case.
Notes: Spacing and deep overbite. Braces upper and lower for 29 months + 3 months Clear Aligners upper and lower (FineLine ®+) to final alignment.

The patient above also had an increased overbite. In this case, a Herbst appliance was used first to correct jaw relationships. This was followed by braces treatment to fine-tune the bite and align both upper and lower teeth.
In growing patients, Herbst appliances can assist with making significant bites and can change face shape (e.g., provide a more balanced profile).
To see these changes, view our Herbst appliance before and after photo gallery.
Notes: Class II malocclusion. Herbst 11 months, upper and lower braces 34 months.

Braces treatment primarily focuses on correcting misaligned teeth and bite issues. The results are straighter teeth, improved symmetry, a harmonised bite, and in some cases, a more balanced facial profile.
While the fundamental principles of orthodontics apply to both, adult facial growth and dental development has generally ceased, which might influence treatment strategies. However, adult braces before and after photos often show dramatic transformations similar to those of younger patients. In addition, adult patients can sometimes consider combining their orthodontic treatment with orthognathic (jaw) surgery, where indicated.
Braces can lead to subtle yet significant changes in facial aesthetics. Corrections in alignment and bite can modify the appearance and position of lips, and can impact the appearance of chin prominence, and cheek contours. This is more common where there is protrusion (teeth in one or both jaws sticking out) or retruded (teeth in one or both jaws leaning or crowded in).
The duration varies based on individual cases, the complexity of corrections required, and the type of braces used. Most comprehensive treatments will take a year or two to complete. Despite this, you’ll likely start to see changes within a couple of months as your new smile unfolds! You don’t need to wait for before and after photos to track your progress. Feel free to use your smartphone to take progress shots along the way.
While braces can influence facial aesthetics, the changes are usually subtle. Sometimes, in order to achieve greater facial change, braces treatment can be combined with other appliances or adjunctive treatments. For adult patients, this could include jaw surgery (orthognathic surgery). If you’re hoping that braces will change your face shape, be sure to let your orthodontist know. That way, your orthodontist can review your case, and provide you with realistic expectations and treatment options. Your orthodontist may be able to show you some before and after photos that are similar to your case to help you to understand what sort of face shape change may be possible for you.
