What are Clear Aligners?

Getting Started is Easy

Once we’ve completed your initial assessment, if treatment is recommended and you’d like to move forward, we can often organise your 3D scan on the same day.

Most of the Specialist Orthodontist treatment planning can be done digitally using your 3D models and photographs, resulting in high levels of precision, and time-saving benefits for you.

Shortly afterwards, you’ll receive a set of transparent, removable, fully-customised orthodontic appliances that fit snugly over your teeth.

Clear aligner treatment can be considered for teens and adults and for some types of early-intervention treatment in younger children.

At Fine Orthodontist Sydney, we’ll ensure that your clear aligners are completely customised to meet your needs while fitting seamlessly into your lifestyle.

What Types of Clear Aligners are There?

The Australian Society of Orthodontists does not endorse a particular aligner ‘brand’ or treatment type, and instead emphasises that:

The skill and knowledge of your orthodontist are far more important than the brand name of your aligners.

With the right clinician, and your commitment to regular wear, your clear aligner treatment can be a great success no matter which aligner system you select.

What About "Mail Order" Aligners?

As clear aligners have gained popularity, we’ve seen an increase in the availability of DIY ‘mail-order’ style systems, which can be associated with notable health and financial risks.

An expert clinician will ensure that your clear aligner treatment plan is realistic and appropriate for your needs and wishes. They also ensure that your progress is expertly supervised to stay on track.

With plenty of systems and clinicians available,  it is crucial to ensure that your treatment will be in the right hands.

Experienced specialist orthodontists have the necessary advanced training and tools to plan for, supervise, and accurately predict your clear aligner results.

You may be pleased to learn that we offer appointment-saving technology to minimise in-office visits.

At Fine Orthodontist Sydney, you can have the best of both worlds – convenience and closely monitored, specialist orthodontist care.

Clear Aligners - Tip #1

Have you been told by another office that fixed braces treatment is your only option?

Dr Fine has over 20 years of experience working with clear aligners and is just as comfortable working with them as traditional braces.

There are a small minority of orthodontic cases that are better suited to braces for clinical reasons.

These days, however – we find most patients can have clear aligners, provided they are committed to wearing them consistently.

How Do Clear Aligners Work?

  • Your clear aligners will be custom-made to fit your teeth and gradually shift them into desired positions over time.

  • Small attachments, also known as “buttons” will most likely be needed on several teeth to help the aligners make more precise movements.

  •  You’ll wear each set of clear aligners for around 1-2 weeks, before switching to the next set in the series.

  • Your aligners can be removed for eating, cleaning your teeth and for other short periods (as needed) throughout the day.

  • To be effective, your aligners should be worn for around 22 hours a day.

Every aspect of your clear aligner treatment will be carefully planned and managed by specialist orthodontist Dr Martin Fine.

The Fine Orthodontist Sydney team is committed to your success, and we’re here ready with all the tips, advice and support you’ll need to reach your smile goals.

Clear Aligners - Tip #2

Your clinician shouldn’t just ‘sell aligners’.

At Fine Orthodontist Sydney, we offer comprehensive treatment planning and expert, specialist orthodontist smile design, with ongoing support.

What are the Alternatives to Clear Aligners?

Fixed braces remain the best option for those who may find it a challenge to commit to removable clear aligner wear.

They may also be the better choice in a small percentage of comprehensive orthodontic cases not well-suited to clear aligner treatment (uncommon).

Fixed braces don’t need to look traditional – unless that’s what you’re after! You may be interested to learn more about:

Clear Aligners - Tip #4

Check the qualifications and experience of any clear aligner provider you may be considering.

In addition to specialist orthodontists, many general dentists in Sydney offer clear aligners alongside other services.

Specialist orthodontists like Dr Fine have 2-3 years of additional tertiary training, and generally won’t offer any other services other than specialist orthodontics.

Temporary discomfort is a common side effect of orthodontic treatment. This discomfort might involve a feeling of pressure, and an achy feeling, especially when biting down on firm or chewy foods. Any discomfort experienced is usually mild. People who have had both tend to report that clear aligners are more comfortable than traditional braces.
