Why Choose Early Orthodontic Treatment?

On Track to a Healthy Smile

Orthodontics Australia recommends parents bring their child for an early orthodontic examination from around age 8.  A check around this time will will ensure that your child is screened for developing issues before they become bigger problems.

Some orthodontic solutions work best during particular phases of dental growth and facial development. This means that the ideal time for your child’s first orthodontic visit is when facial bones are still developing, and there is a mix of adult and permanent teeth still in place.

Will my Child Need Early Orthodontic Treatment?

If indicated, early intervention can reduce the likelihood of more invasive or complex treatments being needed later.

Early intervention treatments are usually designed to achieve specific, targeted outcomes. For example, some child may benefit from overbite correction during their growth spurt. Other children may benefit from early intervention to address persistent habits (e.g. thumb sucking).

In most cases, early intervention can be completed without the need for fixed braces. Braces for kids are usually started once most of your child’s adult teeth are in place.

What if my Child isn't Ready to Start Orthodontic Treatment?

If no early intervention is indicated at this stage, your child will still benefit from six-monthly or yearly dental growth and development checks.

This will ensure that your orthodontist can plan for the future, and pinpoint the best time to commence orthodontic treatment to ensure the fastest, easiest and best possible overall result for your child’s smile.

As starting orthodontic treatment at the right time makes things much easier for all involved, growth and development check-up appointments are complimentary.*

Does My Child Need to See a Paediatric Orthodontist?

Sometimes parents wonder whether their child needs to see a specialist ‘paediatric orthodontist’. However, there is no distinct specialty that focuses solely on children’s orthodontics. All orthodontists spend a large portion of their studies focusing on the special needs of children.

The confusion seems to stem from the existence of ‘paediatric dentistry’; a separate specialty that focuses on children’s overall oral health, including the prevention and treatment of tooth decay and gum disease.  Some paediatric dentists offer orthodontic treatments, such as braces for kids, alongside other services.

Specialist orthodontists, on the other hand, practice orthodontics exclusively, and have formal training and experience in aligning teeth and correcting the bite.  There is no higher qualification when it comes to ensuring that your child’s jaw and tooth positions are optimised.

Frequently Asked Questions about Orthodontic Treatment for Children

The ideal age for braces (if clinically indicated) varies based on individual dental growth and development. Dr Fine usually only considers a full set of braces once most of the adult teeth are in. Most early orthodontic treatments are ‘non-braces’ options, e.g. expanders and plates. Some children will have early treatment first to ensure the best overall result – and then have braces to ‘fine tune’ the results later.

Preventative treatment may be as simple as early removal of a milk tooth. Other possible treatments include orthodontic plates, functional appliances, expanders (rapid maxillary expanders), bite jumpers, holding arches, and short courses of clear aligners.

Yes, clear aligners, including options like Invisalign® or FineLine® can offer a nearly invisible alternative to many traditional options, where clinically indicated. We can discuss these options (if applicable) during your visit.

It may be advantageous to correct prominent “buck teeth” and other similar problems (such as rotated, or twisted front teeth) to reduce the likelihood of these teeth being damaged in the event of a fall or other injury.

As a skilled general practitioner, your dentist plays an essential role in the care of your child’s teeth. Your dentist has knowledge and skills relating to a broad range of oral health issues and can diagnose many problems and common diseases or other issues that can affect your teeth, mouth and gums.

An orthodontist has had a further 2-3 years of full-time specialist university education beyond a dental degree. This additional education and relevant experience enables your orthodontist to accurately detect, diagnose and treat orthodontic conditions.

Visiting a specialist orthodontist for regular checkups from around age 8 is the best way to ensure that no opportunities for early intervention are missed.
