Invisalign® Attachments

Invisalign® has quickly become a well-known and popular option for straightening teeth discretely. While the treatment generally does not involve wires or brackets, some patients do require little buttons or ridges known as  ‘Invisalign® attachments’ for the treatment to be effective.

What Are Invisalign® Attachments?

Invisalign® attachments are small, tooth-coloured dots of dental bonding material. They’re placed on certain teeth and in particular locations. The attachments can be different shapes, too, depending on their purpose. The attachments are bonded (glued) to individual teeth as needed, so the process is relatively simple. And at the end of your treatment, they’re polished off.

Without attachments, some movements may be difficult for the aligners to accomplish. With attachments, the right forces are placed in the right places to move your teeth appropriately. They also allow the aligners to grip the tooth for easier adjustments to your smile.

What You Should Know

Here are a few things you should know about Invisalign® attachments:

1. They’re Discreet

The attachments are usually small and tooth-coloured. The position and shape will vary depending on why they are needed. At the end of treatment, they are polished off and retainers are arranged to maintain your final result.

2. They’re Anchors for the Aligners

The attachments are like anchors that help the aligners move your teeth according to your personalised treatment plan. They click into your aligners to secure the trays and help your teeth move into the desired position.

Attachments have the potential to help people with more complicated cases become candidates for Invisalign® treatment.

3. A Snug Fit for your Aligners

The attachments may change how your aligners feel. They help aligners fit more snugly, which can make it a little harder to remove your aligners for brushing and eating. But, while it may take a little more patience at first, remember that if you have Invisalign® attachments, they are necessary for the treatment plan devised by your orthodontist, and will ensure your treatment is efficient and precise.
