Most people are familiar with the look of braces, but how will they work to create your stunning smile?
1. Tooth brackets are the individual, square-shaped appliances that are glued onto each individual tooth.
Despite their small, simple appearance, your tooth bracket is a complex ‘tooth handle’, which allows your orthodontist to control your tooth.
With careful placement by an experienced orthodontist, tooth brackets ensure that pressure is accurately directed to your teeth in order to achieve your intended results.
2. Wires are threaded through a slot in each tooth bracket, and are the main source of energy for tooth movement.
Once an orthodontic wire is placed along the uneven path of misaligned teeth, it attempts to move back into its original shape, shifting your teeth with it.
Your wires will be quite flexible to begin with, but as treatment progresses, they’ll become stronger and stiffer. Your orthodontist may add bends to your wires to fine-tune your treatment.
3. Elastics Depending on your needs, elastics are sometimes added to your braces treatment plan.
Elastics are small, circular rubber bands usually used to add specific forces, often across jaws (between upper and lower teeth) to achieve movements that are not possible with tooth brackets and wires alone).
Most commonly, elastics are worn towards the end of treatment, once you’re getting close to your final result.

Your new braces will be attached to your teeth using a special tooth glue. Small square brackets are used on most teeth, while circular metal bands are sometimes applied to the back molars.
Bands encircle your whole tooth, so are usually only used if we believe more ‘surface area’ is needed to ensure that the attachment stays on your molar.
Braces placement is one of the most important aspects of your orthodontic treatment. Dr Fine will carefully ensure that each bracket is positioned and angled so that your teeth move in the correct direction, once the wire is in place.
Following placement of the brackets and any bands, your wire will be placed, and your braces closed over the wire to secure it in place.
Once your braces have been applied, our friendly team will provide you with detailed instructions and answer any questions you may have. You’ll also take home a ‘show bag’ of goodies to help you care for your new braces!

Most braces treatments take 12-24 months. After they are removed we fit a special retainer to keep the newly straightened teeth in place. Retainers protect and maintain your smile in the future.
Most patients find that braces do not affect their speech. Lingual braces that are worn behind your teeth, and some plates, can however impact speech. This is one of the reasons many adults looking for a discreet option now choose clear aligners.
Getting braces put on should not hurt, as they are simply glued to the enamel of your teeth using a special glue. A particular wavelength of blue light sets the glue, so you don’t need to wait with your mouth open while they dry. We do need to keep your lips off your teeth for a little while during the process using a ‘cheek retractor’ some people find that this is a little bit uncomfortable. You may also find that your new braces feel a bit tight, and that your teeth feel a little tender in the first few days, and sometimes also after adjustments. This is a sign that your teeth are moving and progress is being made.
You may also find that the braces feel rough compared to your usual smooth teeth, where they touch the inside of your cheeks and lips. This tends to get better over time as your mouth adjusts to your new braces. At Fine Orthodontist Sydney we use high-tech braces which are small and smooth but still provide optimum results. At your braces fitting appointment you’ll be given plenty of tips and advice to ensure that your braces are as comfortable as possible.
