Understanding the cost of braces in Sydney

Orthodontic treatments can be beneficial for maintaining good oral health and improving self-confidence. In Sydney, the cost of braces can vary depending on various factors. This article aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the costs associated with different types of braces and aligners available in Sydney, featuring insights from Fine Orthodontics, a reputable orthodontic clinic in the area.

Main factors affecting the average cost of braces

The overall cost of orthodontic treatment depends on several factors, including the type of braces or aligners, the complexity of the case, the treatment goals, the duration of treatment, and the orthodontist's experience and expertise.

Sometimes, when considering the cost of braces, people tend to focus on the physical components, such as metal braces and wires.  It is true that the type of appliance chosen will generally have some impact on your overall braces cost. However, the fee is mainly related to orthodontic services. In other words, your treatment fee will cover the expert care you receive while wearing braces. This includes time in the clinic during braces placement, adjustment and removal, as well as behind-the-scenes planning and braces case management.

It is for this reason that many orthodontic clinics won't provide you with a final braces cost or accurate estimate unless they have first assessed your orthodontic needs, and understood your orthodontic treatment goals. During an initial assessment, the amount of work required, and approximate number of orthodontic appointments needed can be determined. After this assessment, details regarding braces cost should become more accurate, and personalised to your specific needs.

Because we understand that braces cost can be an important consideration, at Fine Orthodontics we offer free initial assessment appointments to prospective patients. This way you find out exactly how much braces will cost, without needing to make any initial assessment cost outlay.

In addition, we understand that in some cases, it is not just overall cost, but weekly or monthly commitments that can determine whether or not braces are easily affordable. For this reason, at Fine Orthodontics we will also discuss the option of flexible payment plans when quoting your overall braces cost.

Braces

Types of Braces and Associated Costs

The type of appliance used in your orthodontic treatment may have some impact on overall braces cost.

For those getting braces,  overall cost is often considered in the decision to select either metal braces, or clear braces.

Metal braces

Metal braces consist of metal brackets, wires, and bands that are attached to the teeth to gradually align them. The average cost for metal braces in Sydney, including at Fine Orthodontics, ranges between $8,500 and $10,000. Fine Orthodontics uses a self-ligating (self-closing) metal braces system, rather than holding the wire in place using elastic or other ties. This reduces friction, and allows for more efficient tooth movement.  At Fine Orthodontics, self-ligating braces are included as standard, for no additional cost.

Clear braces (Damon®)

Clear braces, such as Damon® braces, are a more discreet alternative to conventional metal braces. They are made of a clear or tooth-coloured material that blends with the teeth, making them less noticeable.

As with metal braces (above), Fine Orthodontics uses clear braces that are ‘self-closing’. This means the braces include small gates to hold in the wires, rather than relying on elastic or other types of ties. This helps to reduce friction, allowing for faster tooth movement. Fine Orthodontics offers clear braces for upper teeth. The cost of clear braces in Sydney, as well as at Fine Orthodontics is generally only slightly more than that of metal.

Clear Aligner Alternatives and Costs

At Fine Orthodontics, we know not everyone wants to wear braces. We're commonly asked about other orthodontic treatments, including clear aligners. When it comes to clear aligners, there are two main options patients can choose from.

External Aligner Manufacturers
- e.g., Invisalign®

Invisalign® is a popular clear aligner system that uses a series of custom-made, removable plastic trays to gradually straighten teeth. Invisalign® offers a discreet and comfortable alternative to traditional braces, with minimal impact on daily activities. The cost of Invisalign® treatment in Sydney, including at Fine Orthodontics, can vary depending on the complexity of the case and the number of aligners required, with prices generally ranging from around $5,000 to $10,000.

FineLine by Dr. Martin Fine

Fine Orthodontics offers FineLine as an alternative to both braces and  externally-produced clear aligners. These aligners are custom-made for each patient and work similarly to other clear aligner systems. Depending on your diagnosis and treatment requirements, FineLine is usually much more affordable - and can be offered a much lower initial deposit -  than other clear aligner options. Despite the lower cost, there is no trade-off in quality, as FineLine is made from the best available materials using the latest technology and techniques. In addition, FineLine can be provided promptly, as there is no need for overseas shipping. FineLine is made in our on-site lab at Bondi Junction Sydney, and turn-around time can be as little as 24-hours, when required.

Factors Affecting Braces Cost in Sydney

There are a number of factors that influence the cost of braces in Sydney.

Complexity of the case

The complexity of the orthodontic case significantly affects the cost of braces or aligners. A common variable is the amount of orthodontist appointments required. Patients with more complex cases, such as severe crowding, large overbites or underbites, or impacted teeth, may require additional procedures or longer treatment times, leading to higher costs. Fine Orthodontics, like other practices, takes the complexity of each case into account when providing cost estimates.

Additional fees may also be payable where additional specialists or dental professionals become involved, such as oral surgeons or gum specialists. Despite the additional fees, full correction of complex issues can lead to savings of both time and cost in the long run.

In most cases, only an orthodontist can truly gauge all the factors that contribute to case complexity. For example, one person may assume that their very crooked teeth means that they must have a 'complex case', while another feels that theirs is limited to only one or two misaligned teeth.

After an initial assessment, some patients are pleasantly surprised that less treatment is needed than they had initially thought (possibly leading to some costs savings), while others may find an array of smile-improvement options are available to them that they hadn't yet considered.

Treatment goals

At some Sydney practices, it may be an option to address only some of your orthodontic issues. At Fine Orthodontics, we recognise that every patient's orthodontic needs and goals are unique.

While comprehensive treatment to address complex orthodontic issues may be indicated, some adult patients may only be interested in making minor cosmetic adjustments to their smile. For example, some people are interested in correcting tooth alignment only, and wish to make an informed decision to accept certain bite issues, depending on their individual case.

The reason to address only some issues may be for various reasons, including a wish to mitigate the cost of braces, to ensure faster treatment, or to make sure their orthodontic treatments fit into their existing lifestyle.

Sometimes small adjustments with virtually invisible orthodontic appliances will make a huge difference in someone's life, allowing them to achieve a more confident smile. Depending on your unique circumstances, some orthodontic treatment  may be preferable to no treatment at all.

At Fine Orthodontics we understand and respect this decision, and where possible, offer a range of effective treatment options tailored to help patients achieve specific goals, often at a lower cost. Our experienced team is dedicated to providing personalised care and guidance to ensure that each patient receives the treatment that is best for them.

Duration of treatment

In most cases, the length of treatment varies from patient to patient, depending on the severity of the case and the type of braces or aligners chosen. Longer treatment durations typically result in an higher overall cost due to increased orthodontist visits, adjustments, and potential replacement of appliances as needed. All Sydney practices will have their own system of quoting for treatment. It is important to understand what is included and what is not, and if any extra cost is applicable if treatment time is longer than anticipated.

Fine Orthodontics carefully assesses each patient's needs to provide a personalised treatment plan with an accurate cost estimate based on the expected duration of treatment. Generally the fee quoted is the overall cost for the treatment, without specifying a particular number of appointments required to complete the treatment.

Despite this, if there are multiple delays caused by issues such as breakages, insufficiently worn or lost appliances, it is possible that additional treatment fees may become payable, or that an additional course of treatment is required. At Fine Orthodontics we provide support and guidance to make it easy for you to care for and wear your appliances as instructed. In most cases patients find it easy to incorporate orthodontic treatment into their lifestyle.

Type of braces or aligners chosen

The type of braces or aligners chosen can impact the overall cost of treatment. As discussed earlier, metal braces cost is usually a little less than clear braces cost, and well-known clear aligner systems like Invisalign® may have higher costs than other clear aligner systems. This is not always the case however, and as discussed above, case complexity and treatment goals are much more likely to impact the overall cost of orthodontic treatment.

That being said, as appliance type can make some difference, patients may wish to balance their aesthetic preferences with their budget when selecting an orthodontic treatment option at Fine Orthodontics or other practices in Sydney.

FineLine

In addition to offering metal braces, ceramic braces and externally-manufactured clear aligners, at Fine Orthodontics we have an additional, exclusive treatment option which can result in significant cost savings, as well as a reduced need for a significant upfront deposit. FineLine clear aligners are designed and made on-site by Fine Orthodontics in Bondi Junction, Sydney.  If FineLine aligners are an option for you, we will let you know.

Geographic location of the orthodontic practice

The average cost of braces and aligners can vary depending on the geographic location of the orthodontic practice.  In general, practices located in urban areas, such as Sydney, may have higher operating costs, which can result in higher prices for orthodontic treatments (including braces cost).

However, choosing a reputable practice like Fine Orthodontics ensures that patients receive quality care and professional service. When selecting a practice, we advise that you consider value for money as well as overall cost.

In addition, to be sure you are making a like-for-like comparison, you may also wish to check the qualifications of your provider. Some general dental offices will offer orthodontic services alongside other types of appointments.

Choosing a specialist orthodontist gives you the benefit of 2-3 extra years of specialist training, and all the extra hours of experience that come with exclusive orthodontic practice.

Insurance Coverage and Payment Options

Fine Orthodontics Take Home Folder.jpg

Dental insurance coverage for orthodontic treatments

In order to help mitigate the cost of braces, many health funds in Australia offer coverage for orthodontic treatments, including braces and aligners. The extent of coverage depends on the specific plan, with policies typically covering a percentage of the total braces cost or a fixed dollar amount.

Patients may wish to consult their insurance provider to determine their coverage and out-of-pocket expenses before beginning orthodontic treatment at Fine Orthodontics or other practices in Sydney.

Flexible payment plans at Fine Orthodontics

To make orthodontic treatment more affordable and accessible, Fine Orthodontics offers flexible payment plans.

These plans typically involve a downpayment followed by monthly instalments over the course of the orthodontic treatment. Patients can discuss options with the Treatment Coordinator at Fine Orthodontics, who is approachable, flexible and solutions-focused in order to find a payment plan to suit your budget.

As we have an on-site lab (reducing upfront appliance fabrication costs), in some cases we can  alleviate the need for a large percentage deposit, and instead spread treatment fees out evenly across the duration of treatment.
