Invisalign® has emerged as a popular orthodontic treatment for those seeking to improve their smiles without the need for noticeable, traditional metal braces.
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign treatment involves a system of clear orthodontic aligners that provide a less noticeable alternative to traditional metal braces. These aligners are made from a clear plastic material that is virtually invisible when worn. Each aligner is custom-made using a 3D scan of your teeth to ensure a perfect fit.
In the hands of an experienced, knowledgeable clinician, Invisalign can be a great tool to assist with treating a range of orthodontic problems,
From minor tooth movement, to more complex cases such as overbites, underbites, or even crossbites.
The treatment involves wearing a series of clear aligners, each designed to make slight adjustments to the position of your teeth. This process is carried out over several months or years, gradually moving the teeth into their correct positions.
The aligners are changed every one to two weeks, advancing you to the next stage of your treatment. The exact duration of treatment is variable, and depends upon the complexity of the individual's case.

How does Invisalign® work?
Invisalign® represents a breakthrough in orthodontic treatment, providing an effective, virtually invisible method for straightening teeth.
Invisalign® aligners work via a sequence of gradual adjustments which guide your teeth into desired positions. The process is meticulously planned and monitored to ensure optimal outcomes.
Here's how it works:
The Invisalign® Treatment Journey
The Invisalign® treatment journey starts with an initial consultation, during which your orthodontist will assess your needs and explain the process.
A 3D scan of your teeth is taken to aid with the creation of a precise treatment plan. From this, your series of aligners is crafted.
You'll wear your aligners for 20-22 hours a day, moving to a new set every week or two.
Regular in-person appointments every six to eight weeks (or Remote Monitoring via a dedicated phone app) will allow your orthodontist to monitor your progress. Upon completion, you'll transition to retainers to maintain your new smile.
How Invisalign® Straightens Teeth
Invisalign®'s methodology lies in its custom-fit aligners, which are planned by your clinician and fabricated based on a detailed 3D scan of your teeth.
Although the aligners are completely removable, generally a number of small bumps will need to be glued to a number of teeth. These are known as ‘attachments’, and they are almost always able to be translucent or tooth-coloured. They are usually much smaller than braces brackets. Attachments help Invisalign® to grip your teeth, and help to ensure that your aligners can achieve more complex movements exactly where they are required.
Each set of aligners is designed to gradually adjust the alignment of your teeth. You'll wear each set for about one to two weeks, moving through the sequence until your teeth have been shifted into their desired positions.
Benefits of Using Invisalign®
There are many benefits of using Invisalign®. Here are the key advantages:
Discreet Treatment: Invisalign® aligners are clear and virtually invisible, offering a more discreet treatment than traditional braces.
Comfort: The aligners are made from smooth plastic, which tends to be more comfortable than the brackets and wires used in braces.
Convenience: The aligners are removable, allowing you to eat, drink, brush, and floss normally.
Versatility: Invisalign® can correct a wide range of orthodontic issues, making it a suitable choice for many patients.
Who is Invisalign® best for?
Invisalign® is an excellent choice for correcting various orthodontic problems, including crooked teeth, overcrowding, gaps, overbites, underbites, and crossbites. However, its effectiveness depends on the details and complexity of the case, as well as the patient's adherence to the treatment plan. For best results, consult with a professional orthodontist to discuss the best treatment options for your specific circumstances.
Limitations of Invisalign®
While clear aligners like Invisalign® provide a plethora of benefits and is an excellent choice for many orthodontic patients, it is important to be aware of certain limitations that may affect its suitability or efficacy for some individuals.
Drawbacks of Using Clear Aligners like Invisalign®
Discipline Required: Invisalign® aligners must be worn for 20-22 hours a day. Those who cannot commit to this may not see the desired results.
Maintenance: Whilst cleaning is generally easier than with braces, some people find it is a hassle needing to remove and store the aligners every time they eat and drink anything other than cold water.
Potential for Loss: As the aligners are removable, they can be lost or forgotten, potentially disrupting treatment.
Unsuitable in some cases: Invisalign® may not be as effective as traditional fixed braces in treating certain severe or complex orthodontic issues.
Cases where Clear Aligners Such as Invisalign® Might Not Be Suitable
Severe Crowding and/or Tooth Rotations: In some instances of extreme crowding, or where there are severe tooth rotations, traditional braces may be more effective.
Unusual Tooth Size or Shape: Traditional braces may be more ideal where tooth crowns are short, or the teeth are very small.
Complex or Severe Bite Issues: Depending on your personal circumstances, some bite problems may not be effectively treated with Invisalign®. One example is a very deep overbite. Despite this, Invisalign may still be considered in a combined treatment plan, along with adjunctive treatments. For example, other appliances or procedures could be used for a short time, before moving to Invisalign®.
Remember, the best way to determine if Invisalign® is suitable for you is by having a detailed discussion with a specialist orthodontist who can evaluate your unique needs and circumstances. Different clinicians will vary in their level of experience and comfort in using clear aligners like Invisalign® for various case types.
With over 20 years experience using Invisalign® to treat a wide variety of cases, Dr. Fine has a firm, realistic understanding of the pros and cons of various orthodontic treatment systems, and is an expert in determining Invisalign® case suitability.
Cases where Clear Aligners Such as Invisalign® May Be More Suitable
It may come as a surprise to learn that in some cases, clear aligners like Invisalign® may actually be a more ideal treatment option than braces. With extensive experience working with both treatment modalities, over time we have seen significant improvements in clear aligner technology. This has included the development of attachments and other accessories that allow clear aligners to make complex movements to achieve greater precision than ever before.
Some examples of cases where we have recommended clear aligners like Invisalign® over braces include:
Open Bites: Depending on the full circumstances of the case, aligners may be more efficient in achieving bite closure.
Excluding Certain Teeth: Sometimes we wish to limit pressure on certain teeth. For example, we may wish to work around a tooth which is heavily restored, has been replaced by an implant, or has a history of trauma. The mechanics of clear aligners like Invisalign® make this achievable.
Where all the Teeth Need to Move ‘Back’: Using braces, when correcting crowding, there is a general tendency for teeth to move forwards and outwards. Where this is not desirable (e.g. for aesthetic or functional reasons), additional procedures or appliances can be considered. In some cases a good alternative option is to use clear aligners like Invisalign® to move teeth back, one by one, to create more space.
The Best Fit for Your Lifestyle
The vast majority of cases will respond well to either clear aligners like Invisalign® or traditional fixed braces. If orthodontic treatment is right for you, you'll most likely have options, and be able to factor in personal preference to decide which treatment will best suit your lifestyle.
Invisalign Alternatives
If you're keen to look at alternative options, we also offer traditional metal braces and clear braces options. You may also wish to consider our own system of clear aligners known, as FineLine. This aligner system is made right here, in our Bondi Junction lab.
