What are Coloured Braces?

Braces colours are tiny elastic rings that come in a wide variety of shades. They are usually known as braces ‘donuts‘ or braces ‘modules‘. Their traditional role was to hold your braces wire in place.

In the picture below, you’ll notice an individual, square-shaped metal tooth bracket (brace) on each tooth. The braces wire is visible as a continuous line, running through a central slot in each tooth bracket. Round elastic modules (blue) have been stretched around each corner of the tooth brackets, effectively securing the wire into place.

Some braces still use this method for securing wires. These days at Fine Orthodontist Sydney, we now use self-closing braces. Each tooth bracket has a little clip or gate that secures the wire in place. This more modern technology is known as ‘self-ligating’ braces. This means braces modules are now no longer necessary.

Despite this new technology, have you got your heart set on braces colours? No problem!

We understand that personalising your braces with colours is fun. It may even feel like a ‘rite of passage’ many people look forward to experiencing. For this reason, if you prefer, we can still use braces colours as a finishing touch on top of our usual self-ligating braces.

Braces Colours Available on Request

So, despite donuts no longer being necessary, we’ve kept braces colours in stock. Should you wish to explore this optional accessory to brighten up your braces, simply let us know at your appointment if you’d like colours. We’ll show you our array of colour choices in stock, and we’ll simply pop them on following your braces adjustment.

We can accessorise most types of Fine Orthodontist Sydney braces with colour. This includes both clear and metal braces.

Choosing Braces Colours

One great thing about braces colours is that you can change them at each adjustment visit.

This means you never need to commit too long to any one colour, and can try out some different shades, depending on your mood or the season. This flexibility also leaves lots of room to unleash your creativity! Braces colours that get noticed can be a great talking point, and they can help you feel more comfortable in your braces.

There’s no need to settle with just one colour at a time. Feel free to choose a second accent colour for your braces. Alternating braces colours look great, as do half-half combinations (e.g., lower teeth in pink, top teeth in purple).

Theme Ideas for Braces Colours

Looking for creative inspiration?  Here’s some ideas to get you started:

  • Favourite season –  E.g. blue and white braces for winter, orange and red braces for autumn.
  • Sports teams – Match your braces colours to your favourite team.
  • Popular culture – Give a nod to the Barbie movie with strikingly pink braces, or pledge allegiance to Gryffindor (Harry Potter) with regal red and gold braces colours.
  • Nature – Beach-lovers could try blue and white; or take inspiration from sunset, dusk or dawn to create striking colour combinations.
  • Other themes include – birthstones, cultural themes (e.g. flags and special holidays) – and anything else that takes your fancy!

Colour Theory

Want to ensure that your braces colours really pop? Or, are you keen to select a colour that will make your teeth look brighter – or will really bring out your eyes?

Show your art teacher that you’ve been listening by using colour theory to help choose the right braces colours. Examples of contrasting colours include various shades of:

  • red and green
  • blue and orange
  • yellow and purple

You can use colour theory to help select two braces colours that look amazing together – or to pick combinations that stand out with your natural colouring.

For example, sapphire blue braces colours will really pop in contrast to warm, golden skin tones and dark eyes. Those with red or auburn hair may find that emerald green braces look amazing. Those with cooler complexions, and yellow blonde hair tend to suit light purple accented with other pastel shades.

Did you know that your braces colour choice can even help make your teeth look whiter? The simplest way to do this is to opt for darker shades of your favourite colours, such as navy blue braces colours.

Crisp white braces colours can look great, and create a streamlined, modern look. Keep in mind however that owing to contrast, white braces colours tend to emphasise the normal yellow undertones present in natural teeth.

Braces Colours To Suit Your Personality

Now that you’ve got some ideas, it’s time to decide how bright you’re willing to go! If you’d like your braces colours to be an attention-grabbing feature, you’ll be at home with some of our very vibrant braces colours. Those who are a little more introverted might prefer the pastel version of their favourite shades for a softer, subtle look.

Our staff can help you choose, we’ve had plenty of experience and can advise you on trending shades, or otherwise recommend timeless, classic braces colours. Certain shades of pink, purple and blue are perennial crowd-pleasers that will have you looking and feeling great in your braces.

Maintaining Your Braces Colours

Whilst they are changed from visit-to-visit, one downside of braces colours is that they can discolour over time, particularly if you eat certain foods. If you love curries or drink lots of dark liquids, e.g., coffee and tea (or red wine for the adults), you might like to choose darker colours.

Your regular hygiene routine will help reduce discolouration to some extent, however, some staining may occur no matter how careful you are. If you’re finding that you are experiencing staining, you could always opt to leave the braces colours off at your next visit, remembering that at Fine Orthodontist Sydney, braces colours are an optional accessory anyway.

If you’re unsure if braces colours are right for you, you can always give braces colours a try, and then review your choice at the next visit!
