Does Medicare Cover Braces?

Young woman wondering if medicare covers braces, holding a piggybank.

If you’re looking into braces for yourself or your child, it’s natural to wonder whether Medicare can help with the cost. After all, braces are often used not only to improve appearance, but to support better oral health and function too. So, does Medicare cover braces?

Technically yes, Medicare can provide some coverage for braces, but this is limited to special circumstances. For example, Medicare may contribute towards braces cost for patients with certain craniofacial conditions (e.g. cleft lip and palate).  Special Medicare item numbers apply for patients who meet the relevant criteria. However, the rebate is limited and usually only covers a portion of the total cost.  Most patients will still have some out-of-pocket expenses even where a Medicare benefit is available for their braces treatment.

So, due to strict eligibility criteria, for most people seeking private orthodontic treatment, Medicare benefits do not apply.

Another avenue for government-funded orthodontic treatment is through the public dental system. This is typically only available to eligible patients who meet strict criteria based on clinical need and other personal circumstances.

For example, in NSW braces treatment is offered through Sydney Dental Hospital, but only after an assessment, and it is best to start the process as soon as possible, as there are long waiting lists in most cases.  You can learn more about accessing public dental services here: NSW Oral Health.

Other Ways to Make Braces More Affordable

While assistance from Medicare for braces is very limited, there are still other options available to help manage the cost of braces treatment. For example:

  • Private Health Insurance: Many private health insurance policies offer partial rebates on orthodontic treatment. If you have cover, it’s worth checking or comparing plans to see what’s included. Waiting periods may apply.

  • Flexible Payment Plans: Most private orthodontists offer payment options to help spread out the cost over time. At Fine Orthodontist Sydney, our friendly team is available to help you with braces costs,  and devise a payment plan that fits your budget and treatment needs.
