Getting Braces as an Adult

Are you considering getting braces as an adult?

The benefits of adult orthodontic treatment extend beyond aesthetics. Improper jaw alignment, a misaligned bite and crooked teeth can cause various issues as you age.

4 Things to Know About Getting Braces as An Adult

1. There Are Options

If you are considering braces, you have multiple options.

Traditional braces are hardy and don’t break easily. Many adults tend to avoid this option, though, because of the visibility of the braces.

If indicated, many adults opt for clear aligners like Invisalign® , which are nearly invisible. The trays can be taken out to eat,  which makes mealtime simpler than with fixed braces.

If you’d prefer fixed braces over aligners, or your treatment plan requires them – a good compromise may be clear braces, which are less obvious than metal braces.

2. You Might Need a Retainer

Once your braces come off, you’ll have a straight and healthy smile. But, the work doesn’t end there.

You’ll likely wear a retainer to keep your teeth properly aligned for six weeks after the braces removal. You will still have to sleep with the retainer beyond six weeks (ideally, ongoing).

The good news is that most people find retainers convenient and comfortable.

3. Length of Treatment

Adult treatment length varies significantly depending on your unique needs.

For example, adults who require significant bite correction might need to wear braces longer than someone who just needs a minor tweak, perhaps to treat relapse from treatment they had as a child.

An average of around 12-18 months gives you a good, realistic expectation. A Free* Assessment will provide you with a more personalised estimate for your case.

4. Prevent Future Issues

Straightening your teeth is often about more than just aesthetics. In some cases, braces can help prevent oral health problems down the line.

For example, crowded teeth are harder to clean, which can encourage plaque build-up. This build-up can increase your vulnerability to gum disease and decay.

Overall, realigning your teeth and getting braces as an adult can lead to better oral health for years to come. As everyone’s situation is unique, a consultation is the only way to know for sure if adult orthodontics is suitable in your case.
