If you’re thinking about straightening your teeth with clear aligners, there’s never been a more exciting time to start. In 2025, one of the newest breakthroughs in orthodontics is here: direct-printed aligners.
These aren’t your typical aligners. Thanks to cutting-edge tech and innovative materials, direct-printed aligners offer a smoother, smarter treatment journey.
At Fine Orthodontist Sydney, we’re proud to be one of the first practices to offer this next-generation aligner technology. Direct printed clear aligners are the low-fuss, efficient path to the smile you’ve been waiting for.
What Is a Clear Aligner?
So what exactly is a clear aligner?
- Clear aligners are transparent, custom-made trays that fit snugly over your teeth and gradually guide them into the right position. They’re a modern alternative to traditional braces, offering a more comfortable and convenient experience for many patients. Well-known examples of clear aligner brands include Invisalign®, Fineline®, and Spark®.
- Unlike fixed braces, clear aligners are removable, making it easier to maintain good oral hygiene and enjoy meals without restrictions. They also offer a more discreet look, which is especially appealing to adults and teens.
So, What’s Changing?
While the concept of clear aligners remains the same, the way they’re made has evolved. Enter Direct Print Clear Aligners, a new generation of clear aligners that are produced using cutting-edge 3D printing technology.
Traditional aligners are made by first 3D-printing a model of your teeth, then heating and shaping a thin sheet of plastic over that model – a process called thermoforming. Direct-printed aligners skip the middle step. They’re printed from a light sensitive resin directly from your digital treatment plan.
This brings several exciting benefits.
What’s in it for You?
Direct-printed aligners aren’t just a new way of making clear aligners—they’re an advanced option designed to improve your experience and results. Here’s how they make a difference:
-
- Smarter Clear Aligners for Outstanding Results
-
- Heat-Activated for a Fresh Fit Every Time
-
- Easy to Clean, Durable Clear Aligners
-
- Nearly Invisible Clear Aligner Treatment
Read on for a closer look at how each of these benefits supports your smile journey.
1. Smarter Clear Aligners for Outstanding Results
Direct-printed aligners give us more control than traditional ones. The older process of heating and shaping a plastic sheet over a model of your teeth can stretch the material and struggle to completely capture some of the finer details, or tighter areas accurately.
With direct printing, we can also vary the thickness of different parts of your aligner, something that thermoforming can’t do.
Together, these features allow us to:
- Achieve a more precise fit, even in complex or detailed areas, thereby providing a better ‘grip’ on each tooth.
- Control the amount and direction of force applied to specific teeth or areas, tailored to your treatment plan.
- Minimise unwanted pressure or looseness, allowing for more efficient and predictable tooth movement.
- Make aligners easier to place and remove, without compromising effectiveness.
- Enhance comfort and deliver more consistent results throughout your treatment.
- Streamline the entire process, with fewer production steps and greater accuracy from scan to smile.

2. Heat-Activated for a Fresh Fit Every Time
Direct-printed clear aligners are made from an advanced shape-memory material that holds its form better than traditional aligners, which can stretch or lose shape over time. A quick dip in warm water reactivates the aligner, helping it return to its original shape—almost like hitting the refresh button.
This responsiveness helps maintain a close, consistent fit against your teeth for more effective and efficient treatment with every wear.
What this means for you:
- More consistent and reliable pressure on your teeth throughout your treatment.
- Stronger, longer-lasting performance across the full wear period, making sure every moment you’re wearing your aligners counts.
3. Easy to Clean, Durable Clear Aligners
These clear aligners can withstand high temperatures – up to 100°C for a short time – which means:
- Easy to clean and disinfect if needed.
- More resistant to warping or distortion (helping prevent any unnecessary setbacks from accidental heat exposure).
4. Nearly Invisible Clear Aligner Treatment
Looking for invisible clear aligner treatment? We totally understand!
Direct-printed clear aligners are made from advanced resin that offers excellent transparency, making them almost invisible when you smile.
Furthermore, because they’re printed with greater precision and fit more snugly:
- There’s potentially less need for attachments (the small bumps sometimes placed on teeth to guide movement).
- You get a more natural look throughout treatment.
- They feel smooth when talking or smiling.
- The overall experience is discreet and comfortable.
Are All Clear Aligners Now Direct-Printed? Not Quite.
Not all aligners are created the same – and not all providers can offer this new technology just yet. While many aligner companies still rely on traditional thermoforming methods (and have understandably invested heavily in that system), we’re in a unique position to move with the times.
One of the reasons we’re able to bring direct-printed aligners to you so early is because of our on-site setup. It gives us the flexibility to adopt new innovations quickly, without being tied to large-scale, centralised manufacturing processes.
Direct Printed Aligners – The Icing on the Cake!
“Great” just got better!
Direct printing isn’t the start of Fine Orthodontist Sydney’s journey to provide you the best possible clear aligner treatment – it’s the evolution of it.
It builds on the benefits of in-office clear aligner production, which we already use to deliver your orthodontic care faster, more flexibly, and with less environmental impact.
Now, with direct printing – we’re taking it one step further to ensure even better fit, control and efficiency.

What Other Options are Available?
While the new developments are exciting, it is important to remember that orthodontic treatment is highly individual, and what is right for you will depend on your unique diagnosis – as well as your preferences.
The Australian Society of Orthodontists does not endorse a particular aligner ‘brand’, and instead emphasises that:
The skill and knowledge of your orthodontist are far more important than the type name of your aligners.
We couldn’t agree more!
With the right clinician, and your commitment to regular wear, your clear aligner treatment can be a great success no matter which aligner system you select.
Here are some of our most popular options:
- Invisalign® or Spark Aligners
- FineLine® (only available at Fine Orthodontist Sydney)
