Do I Need a Referral to See An Orthodontist?

Updated: Nov 26, 2023

In Australia, you do not need a referral to see an orthodontist. You may like to ask your dentist for recommendations or talk to friends and family. Once you’ve found an orthodontist near you, simply phone to request an appointment, or book a consultation online.

Why Would You Need to See an Orthodontist?

Orthodontists are specialists in their field of dentistry. They generally concentrate on diagnosing, preventing and treating dental and facial irregularities to help align jaws, bites, teeth and straighten crooked teeth. It is this specialisation that sets an orthodontist apart from a dentist.

Choosing a specialist orthodontist can enhance the health of your smile. Having confidence in your smile can impact your life positively. A beautiful and straight smile means your teeth will be easier to clean, which can help improve gum health and reduce the likelihood of tooth decay.

What Are the Benefits of Seeing an Orthodontist?

Besides a confidence boost, orthodontic treatment can bring a myriad of physical benefits, including uncovering a stunning smile via the correction of:

  • Gaps between teeth

  • Bad bites that can harm gums and teeth

  • Overcrowded or crooked teeth

  • Misaligned or protruding teeth

  • Chewing, speech or breathing difficulties

  • Misaligned jaws

Orthodontists can also assist with the diagnosis and management of obstructive sleep apnea as well as help manage persistent finger and thumb sucking in children.

There Are High-Tech, Clear Options

Orthodontic treatment has improved significantly since the days of metal braces and bands. These days, contemporary treatments are designed to be as comfortable, unobtrusive and - in some instances - as invisible as possible, which means you can carry on without discomfort or embarrassment.

Traditional braces remain a highly effective way to straighten teeth and achieve a stunning smile. However, today’s orthodontic treatment options now include digitally customised braces, clear braces, and clear aligners.

You Don’t Need a Referral to See an Orthodontist

If you are considering traditional braces or even clear aligners, a specialist orthodontist has the training and experience to realign your smile and give you that boost of confidence. To learn more book a free* assessment at one of the Fine Orthodontics clinics today – you won’t need to bring a referral to see an orthodontist!

*If orthodontic X-rays are required, a fee of $180 applies. See Terms and Conditions. Treatment may not be suitable for you.
